@Darren: I agree if your application is a tool, you need people to simply find it, but a lot of developers use the technology to present requested content without reloading pages. It might not always be smart, but neither was releasing Vista...

@Johnny: Microsoft introduced some nice features in Orcas to deal with SEO and Silverlight. It's not perfect, but it's something. I'm not yet familiar with how JavaFX development involves SEO, so I can't comment on that (yet). As for AJAX, you are totally right. A good investment in the technology will go a long way.

If SEO is a problem for Flex, how does SilverLight or JavaFX not have the same issue. Tell it like it is. SilverLight is behind the curve, and Microsoft is bribing development houses (and bloggers) to pump out stuff that looks cool. JavaFX, pie in the sky catch-up. The only two dogs out front are Flex and AJAX. And if AJAX had some well thought out framework like Flex them maybe with these new javascript engines coming online we'll see some sweet RIA's.

I agree with all the other posters above that it doesn't make sense to worry about SEO for applications. Do you need to find all the "pages" (not really a relevant paradigm for RIA's but you used it) of Buzzword or Photoshop Express? No - you just need to find where on the web the app is located. It would be rare to use any of these technologies for a brochure-style site, which is where SEO is relevant. Of course, if you were to use Flex, for example, for a non-app site, you can always take the time to make it searchable and use deep-linking to link to individual pages if this is important to your use-case:

@John: Google always had difficulty indexing Flash websites, and even with the recent improvements, there remains numerous issues. For example, Google can't index separate pages on a Flex site, which makes organizing content and optimizing pages for keywords pointless. Instead it is seen as one soup with all sorts of ingredients.

@Andy: Curl isn't widespread (indeed most are in Japan, with others sprinkled all over the place), but those that use it are fanatics. I'm a bit surprised why it hasn't picked up, which is why I am optimistic that it has a shot.

@YuiYose: Indeed GWT is in the same boat as Flash, but there's an effort being made to solve this issue, albeit not as much as some would like.

Overall, this issue is more important for the little guy who can't afford a high search engine ranking and instead relies on content. If you have the dough to back you up, you indeed don't have to worry about it.

@Alex. If you take a look at Google GWT, you'd see there's obfuscation on those javascript programs. If Google doesn't mind these obfuscated javascript programs being un-indexable, no one else should worry much about it.

@Richard I have to disagree with the "800lb Gorilla" claim. I've never had a client in the enterprise even ask about Curl, and our client is no slouch. I constantly hear Curl is "huge in Japan", but don't see it or hear about it outside of Japan.

<em>"Flex is bad for SEO, plain and simple."</em>

Which site are you trying to locate, under which search term?

(For the others, which can you actually deploy atop today?)

@YuiYose: These "applications" are moving to the Internet. It certainly became obvious with the release of Google Chrome, so if your application is packaged as a website, you as a business want it to be indexed.
